Background
Pasquier was a moderate reformer and was imprisoned during the Terror. Napoleon made him Prefect of Police, 1810-1814. He held office under Louis XVIII but could not work with the extreme royalists, and found his niche as President of the Chamber of Peers for the whole of Louis Philippe's reign. His memoirs give a valuable picture of the old Parlement de Paris, of which he was a counsellor, at the time of the Revolution.
