Background
Lord Minto was ambassador to Berlin, (1832-1834), and in 1847-1848 he undertook a special mission to Italy, to support Pius IX in his anticipated liberal reforms. He married in 1806 Mary Brydone, (1786-1853), of Lennel House, Berwick and their daughter married Lord John Russell, Prime Minister 1846-1852 and 1865-1866.
