Background
Tupper's immensely popular 'Proverbial Philosophy', which came out in four series from 1839 to 1867, was thought at first by the American writer N.P. Willis to be a forgotten work of the 17th century. The 'Standard' tells how Tupper thought of expressing his love for his wife in the manner of Solomon's Proverbs, whence the articles 'On Marriage, Love, Friendship, and so on'.
