Background
In 1836 Berkeley fought a duel with Dr. Maginn who had savagely reviewed his romance 'Berkeley Castle', after Berkeley had publicly assaulted Fraser, the magazine's publisher. In 1841 he obtained admission of ladies to the Commons gallery.
