Barber held important posts with the Daily Mail, and at the time of this letter was Foreign Correspondent. In 1937-1939 he worked and travelled in Singapore, China, Siberia and Russia. In 1957 he was the first Briton to reach the South Pole since Captain Scott.Eileen Cond was a book collector who sent out her bookplate to her favourite authors, many of whom signed and returned them to her. Among the most notable was Ian Fleming.
