BROWN
(G. Gordon, Anthropologist)
Autograph Letter Signed to H. J. Braunholtz, 1888-1963, of the British Museum,
enclosing a brief sketch of the material culture of the Hebe, together with further notes on the specimens sent you... the names of the pottery-making instruments are, to the best of my knowledge, the correct versions... The smoothing stone... is usually called ki-garga, ki being a diminutive... when the smallness rather than the 'stoneness' is being emphasised. The word you understood to mean skin is a phonetic impossibility, Brown has written it as 'ng'ingo', he is arranging to send a full set of pot-making tools and asks, Would you be interested in specimens of Samoan culture?... There is no necessity to advance any money since I am here for three years and receiving an adequate salary, 3 sides 4to., Leone, Tutuila, American Samoa, 15th January
