Sir William built the 'Physical Observatory' ('South Building') at Greenwich 1891-1899 and equipped it with a new 28 refractor for visual use and a 26 for photographic. The latter was used to map the Sky between the North Celestial Pole and 65 deg. N declination, as part of a great international project.. His own research concerned mainly sunspot activity.
