Background
Sir John described his education as turned loose in a library for some years. He was a reporter in the Houses of Parliament, bicycled round the world, went to the US to consider industrial questions in 1902, and to the Balkans in 1905. In 1918 he toured the US giving nightly lectures on the part played by Great Britain in the war, and received the US Treasury's thanks for helping to raise $23,000,000 for the 'Liberty Loan'.
