Background
Knight wrote 'The Higher Education of Women', 1887, and edited the University Extension Manuals in 25 volumes, 1891-1899. Of these he wrote volumes 1 and 3 on 'The Philosophy of the Beautiful' in poetry and art. He also catalogued the contents of Dove Cottage.Anna Swanwick went to Germany in 1839 to enlarge her education, and became a famous translator of Goethe and Aeschylus. She helped found Queen's College, Bedford College (of which she was principal), Somerville and Girton.
