Hutton was joint editor with Bagehot of the 'National Review', 1855-1864, assistant editor of 'The Economist', 1858-1860, and joint editor and part proprietor of 'The Spectator', 1861-1897. He was also professor of mathematics at Bedford College, 1856-1865.
