Background
In his long reign, the much-loved Duke carried through many reforms, and lived another 16 years after abdicating in favour of his son Georg II. The latter's son Bernhard married Princess Charlotte of Prussia (1860-1919, eldest daughter of Friedrich III and Victoria) on 18th February 1878.
