to 'Beloved Nana', Mrs Mary Ann Wakelin, b. 1837 or 1838, saying It is rather early to write... to wish you a happy Christmas & New Year but I do so with all my heart... thou[gh] John is not there... did he write from Australia or from the ship?, she has been in bed, feverish, afterwards I felt so week yesterday... that I could hardly walk, her eldest sister CHARLOTTE, 1860-1919, has lost her [husband's] Grandfather of Meiningen & has only shortly returned... she loved him very much, she will address this letter to where you told & we wrote it down.
