Background
An old note, joined by a tab, explains that the Colonel had passed on to the Prince an invitation from Mr Temple, British Minister at Naples, to a ball that night at the Academia. The Prince's first wife (1832) was Amelia, daughter of Francesco I of the Two Sicilies. He was born in Rio de Janeiro, where Maria I of Portugal (1732-1816) had gone to escape Napoleon. His own father died when he was less than a year old.
