Background
Grandson of Sir Robert, the Prime Minister, the 3rd Earl sold the latter's collection of pictures at Houghton to Catherine the Great in 1779. As Lord Lieutenant for Norfolk he was active in the militia, and was the last of the nobility to practise hawking. The Earl had a 'cottage' at Eriswell, near Newmarket.
