Background
Maradan's letters dated 1800-1801, sending the 18 volumes of Young's 'immortal works', in three instalments, begging his acceptance, are in the British Library (Add. 35128, ff. 383, 354, 294). Maradan also thanks him for the loan of a copy of his 'Political Arithmetic', which formed the 18th volume. Other letters to Young from French agricultural societies testify to their immense respect for him, 'despite the war'. In 1793 the Committee of Public Safety ordered a summary of his 'Travels in France'to be printed for the use of the societies and 'sent to all districts'.
