Background
In 1771 occurred the famous clash between the City and the Commons over the printing of debates. A Commons messenger imprisoned the printer of the 'London Evening Post', only for him to be released next day by the Lord Mayor (Brass Crosby) and Alderman Richard Oliver, M.P. for the City. This was in March, after a similar incident in February, and Crosby (on the 27th) and Oliver (25th) were sent to the Tower till the session ended on 8th May. Lord Chatham described one step in these proceeedings as 'the act of a mob, not of a parliament', and the right to print has never been challenged since.
