referring him to his 'Congregational Lecture' of 1877, 'The Basis of Faith', and saying, the practical question is - are we satisfied to stick fast in difficulties, & shut our eyes to the evidence?... for a sensible man, difficulties go for nothing, when there is clear downright positive evidence the other way... My book is an attempt to give an honest estimate of this evidence, with a leading example (17th January 1887), he sends his book, I owe a debt of gratitude to those who endeavour to make any writings of mine useful, some of his lectures have been cut up... into a number of short tracts... This has been much complained of by some, and wishing they might be reprinted as originally (10th November 1891), together 7 sides 8vo., Leeds, 1887 -
