Background
Drouyn de Lhuys became a deputy in 1842 as well as holding a commercial post at the foreign ministry, but was deprived of the latter for demanding that Guizot be put on trial. Napoleon III made him his Foreign Minister, (1848-1849), at a critical time for Europe, then ambassador to London (July 1849) where he settled the 'Don Pacifico' affair. He was again foreign minister 1851, 1852-1856, (resigning when his peace overtures with Russia failed) and 1862-1866. See the affectionate biography by Paul Antonini (1890) for stories of his work in agriculture.
