Background
Signed whilst in mourning for her first fiancee Nicholas, Tsarevitch of Russia who died of TB. A very unusual portrait of the young Princess in mourning. Both she and her parents felt that the Russian throne had slipped from their fingers. Luckily a year later his brother Alexander proposed and Dagmar became the shining star of Imperial Russia.
