Background
Miss Bremer was awarded the Swedish Academy's smaller gold medal in 1830 for her 'Sketches of Common Life'. In 1849 for a few years she travelled and was warmly received in America and England, where Mrs. Mary Howitt had translated her works. After her return Miss Bremer devoted herself to the advancement and emancipation of women, reflected in her later novels, to prison visiting and the relief of orphans.
