appointing Michael Thomson-Carmichael to become an officer in our land forces, in the first document dated 1915, the rank he has earned is that of Major, 1 side folio, January 1915, in the second document Mr Thomson-Carmichael has aquired the rank of Captain, this document has the 'Temporary stamp' all but rubbed off, 1 side folio, 23rd November

Background
These two documents seem confusing due to the fact that Carmichael seems to 'earn' himself a demotion over the course of three years. This was quite common in wartime due to the fact that temporary field commissions were needed because of the heavy casualties, and in this instance it is most likely that at the time of his promotion to Major, Carmichael was a Lieutenant who became commanding officer due to tragedy, and that at the end of the war when he received his next commission to Captain, this was in fact the appropriate promotion.
