Background

Victoria and Ernst bowed to their families pressure and married on 9 April 1894 at Schloss Ehrenburg in Coburg. The wedding was a large affair, with most of the royal families of Europe attending. Victoria became The Grand Duchess of Hesse and by Rhine. Her wedding was also significant as the official engagement of the future Tsar Nicholas II of Russia to Ernst's younger sister, Alix, was announced at the same time.
