The couple had married on 25 January 1858 at the Chapel Royal, St. James's Palace. The bridegroom turned out to be the favourite of all Queen Victoria's sons-in-law. When he finally succeeded to the throne as Emperor Friedrich III in 1888, he was already dying of the throat cancer that was to kill him three short months later. Hills & Saunders was one of the leading Victorian photographic firms, started as a partnership between Robert Hills & John Henry Saunders. They were social photographers with studios at different times in London, Harrow & Eton & Rugby, Oxford & Cambridge and Aldershot & Sandhurst. They were successful photographers to the royal family.
