Background
Sir Richard's father, Sir Josiah, the 1st Baronet, was Chairman of the East India Company and built the great house at Wanstead, Essex, with its 260 ft. frontage. Sir Richard was M.P. for Maldon, 1708-1710, and for Essex 1710-1722 and 1727-1734. He received the Irish Peerage of Castlemaine as a reward for changing his party allegiance.
