Background
In 1893, when Princess May became Duchess of York, she chose Lady Eva (née Greville, only daughter of the 4th Earl of Warwick), a childhood friend, as her first (at that time sole) Lady-in-Waiting. Known as 'Little Bird', as she also signed herself, she quickly became the Duchess's most efficient and devoted general manager. In 1895 Lady Eva married Frank Dugdale, (1857-1925, a Warwickshire gentleman and Yeomanry officer, later Colonel), who became Queen Mary's Equerry. Lady Eva's children were close in age to Queen Mary's - her third son was born three months before Prince John.
