I fear I shall not see you again this time as I am going to fly to Marseille next week... but try & come again in late May... & we can show you something better. All you say of the aesthetic influence of gardens & old families is only too true but it is sad these socialist Governments are only out to destroy the best that is in life in our beloved Country... Background
Both Millais, son and biographer of Sir John Everett Millais, and Sir Herbert Eustace Maxwell, (1845-1937, M.P., from 1877 7th Baronet of Monreith, Wigtownshire), were passionate naturalists and writers. Millais' paintings of wildfowl are among the best ever published. Maxwell, in addition to many works in history, travel and archaeology, wrote Scottish gardens … types old and new, (1908), and Flowers: A garden notebook, with suggestions for growing the choicest kinds, (1923).
