Background
She is wearing the same outfit that she wore when she was photographed by Cecil Beaton in 1957. His famous photographs of Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace in 1939 established a new romantic image for the monarchy. He subsequently photographed her five times between 1947 and 1957 and deliberately tried to re-create the spirit of the 1939 image - the be-spangled crinoline dress with lots of diamond jewellery. Gladwyn JEBB (1st Baron Gladwyn, 1900-1996) was a prominent British civil servant, diplomat and politician who served as the acting secretary-general of the United Nations between 1945 and 1946. He was Ambassador to Paris from 1954 to 1960. Jebb is standing with his wife Cynthia née Noble (1898-1990) and their two daughters Vanessa and Stella and standing and seated the other side of the Queen Mother. The Queen Mother paid an official visit to Paris in May 1956 which is presumably when this photograph was taken.
