Background
The present letter originates from the private collection of Princess Dorothea von Lieven (1785-1857) an influential figure in the social political circles and wife of Russian Ambassador to London. Metternich was one of the most important diplomats of his era. He was the Austrian Empire's Foreign Minister and Chancellor from 1821-48.
