Background
Between 1870 and 1885 Huxley went through a period of almost ceaseless activity. He was chosen as one of the secretaries of the Royal Society, published a variety of philosophical works, was a member of the London School board, and served on six royal commissions. This was in addition to his lecturing and his scientific publications. Huxley is known as Darwin's Bulldog for his advocacy of Charles Darwin's theory of evolution.
