(Sir Hiram Stevens, 1840-1916, American Born Inventor of the Maxim Machine Gun)
Autograph Letter Signed to Rev. James A. Monckton
about Ned Kelly's armour, 'Australian Kelly' had part of a steam boiler which he carried about with him as a shield and he was a very successful bush ranger and committed numerous murders. There is no such thing as bullet proof cloth. The German tailor had a chrome steel shield 3/8 inch thick. My shield was nickel steel 1/4 inch thick and weighed 10 bs to the square foot so you see it is a question of weight. Nothing less than 10lbs to the square food would do..., 3 sides 8vo., 18 Queen's Gate Place, London, 15th December
