Background
After valuable service as 1st Lord of the Admiralty in which post he selected Nelson to lead the Battle of the Nile, and then Home Secretary, Lord Spencer retired to Althorp and was one of the founders of the Roxburghe Club. Banks for a while styled himself by the bogus title Sir T.C. Banks, Baronet of Nova Scotia. He was notorious for having assisted several claimants to dormant peerages, based on the very flimsiest evidence, which he strengthened with imaginary pedigrees.
