Background
From the collection of May Otten, London socialite and waltz-writer from the Victorian period. She fell on hard times and ended up in the poor house with a drinking problem. She was married twice. Both husbands died suddenly and before their times, creating scandals. Henry Smith published his memoirs under the title of From Commissioner to Constable. He was also the cousin of Robert Louis Stevenson. During his 10 years with the City of London, he was involved in many murder mysteries and trials of famous criminals, but none of these occupied him more than the Jack the Ripper murders.
