Background
Russell was Foreign Minister in the Palmerston Government of 1859–1865 at the same time Gorchakov was Foreign Minister and was noted for his acrid responses to Russell's despatches. Cavour was both Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs. The strain of the task of creating Italy took their toll on Cavour who fell ill, presumably of malaria, and in June of 1861 he died.MINISTERODEGLI AFFARI ESTERIMinistre de Sardaigne LondresPrince Gortchakoff m'a fait remettre une note voulue en termes très vifs pour m'annoncer le rappel de la légation Russe à Turin.Prier Lord John Russell de vouloir bien autoriser ministre d'Angleterre à Peterbourg de protéger sujets sardes en Russie et le ministre d'Angleterre à Vienne à prendre sous sa protection les sujets sardes en Autriche.
