saying she is ashamed never to have written before to thank you & the Brigadier for the delightful dinner you gave Lady Helena & myself on your birthday... It was such a pleasant interlude in the otherwise official meals we attended. The fact is I had never a moment free from some engagement or other, when free could just fall on my bed for for a few moments... I did not write to anybody. It is lovely & peaceful to be back here & so much cooler. If ever you are this way do look us up. Come for a nice bathe & then lunch & a siesta... Background
In 1950, Princess Alice became the first Chancellor of the University of the West Indies. As Chancellor, she visited the university every year, staying as a guest of Sir Kenneth Blackburne, Governor-General of Jamaica, and his wife. This is probably written to the wife of Brigadier Paul Crook (1915-2004). In the early 1960's Crook was appointed head of the Army Airborne Training and Development Centre before becoming Commander and Chief of Staff of the Jamaica Defence Force. He was ADC to the Queen from 1964 to 1967.
