Background
James Rae (1825-1890) was involved in photography from about the beginning of the Cartes de visite boom, probably starting in business in Dumfries in 1859 or 1860. He had a particular liking for Robert Burns, and in 1878 made the huge donation of five guineas towards the construction of a statue of Burns which still stands in the centre of Dumfries.
