Background
Generally known as Norman Shaw, he was a British architect who worked from the 1870s to the 1900s, known for his country houses and for commercial buildings. He is considered to be among the greatest of British architects; his influence on architectural style was strongest in the 1880s and 1890s. He designed large houses such as Cragside, Grim's Dyke, and Chigwell Hall. One of Shaw's major commissions was the planning and designing of buildings for Bedford Park, London. A report in 1913 mentioned the retirement of the firm of Ismay, Imrie & Co. from the shipping world. Founded in 1868 by the late Mr. T.H. Ismay at the age of 31 for the purpose of bringing into existence the now famous White Star Line, officially known as the Oceanic Steam Navigation Company, the firm of Ismay, Imrie, and Co. closed its career with the retirement of Mr. J. Bruce Ismay from the position of President of the International Mercantile Marine Company. There were other shareholders in the old White Star Line besides its founder, but Messrs. Ismay, Imrie, and Co. and the White Star Line were convertible terms.
