Background
The writer was the elder daughter of Adolphus, 1774-1850, 7th son of George III, and sister of Mary Adelaide, Queen Mary's mother. For a fine photograph of the Grand Duchess see Pope-Hennessy's 'Queen Mary', 1959, p. 321, also for the long connection of Queen Mary with her aunt. The Grand Duchess was much loved and valued, not least because she could remember the coronations of William IV and Queen Victoria.
