Background
Thomas Woolner was the only sculptor amongst the original members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. He was elected to the Royal Academy in 1875 and served for a time as professor of sculpture. Woolner's circle of friends included Thomas Carlyle and Alfred Tennyson and Woolner, himself, was a successful writer and poet. He also corresponded with Charles Darwin, who named part of the human ear, the Woolnerian Tip after him. Sir Joseph Dalton HOOKER (1817-1911, Botanist and Explorer, Darwin's closest friend) commissioned a marble bust of his father Sir William Jackson HOOKER (1785-1865, Botanist and First Director of Kew) in April 1859 which is now in the National Portrait Gallery.
