Background
In 1864 Dagmar was engaged to the elder brother of Alexander III but her fiancee Nicholas, Tsarevitch of Russia died of TB. Both she and her parents felt that the Russian throne had slipped from their fingers. Luckily a year later his brother Alexander proposed and Dagmar became the shining star of Imperial Russia.
