Background
In 1919 Haig was created Earl Haig, Viscount Dawick and Baron Haig, of Bemersyde in the County of Berwick. He also received the thanks of both Houses of Parliament and a grant of £100,000 (his secretary Philip Sassoon had asked for £250,000), to enable him to live in the style appropriate to a senior peer. At this time Spencer was honorary colonel of the 4th Volunteer Battalion, Northamptonshire Regiment, commanded by C. Brown From the family of Col. John Brown. He started in the territorial army in 1901 as a Lieutenant and retired in 1941 as Director General Territorial Army – as well as running a successful architectural practice. At this time he was a Colonel and commander of the 162nd (East Midland) Infantry Brigade and following that was on the board of the British Legion of which in 1930/34 he was Chairman.
