showing the two sisters head and shoulders half length in matching dresses with a frilled collar, no place, no date but Windsor
From the collection of Princess BEATRICE (1857-1944)Commissioned by Queen Victoria while the children were staying at Windsor. Princess ALICE of HESSE, their mother was helping to nurse the Prince of Wales at Sandringham where he was suffering from typhoid and so the children were sent away to stay with their Grandmother. Alice believed that Royalty was nonsense and so when the children later got diptheria she insisted on nursing them herself and subsequently died of the disease on 14th December 1878. They are unusual images because they were private images that weren't released publicly and there are copies of these photographs in the Royal Archives.
