Fine illustrated Autograph Letter Signed to Mr TRELOAR
(Sir William, 1843-1923, Carpet Manufacturer, Philanthropist & Lord Mayor of London) starting with a pen and ink sketch of the profile of a man smoking a cigarette, he thanks him for his cheque and tells him he is going down to town and will call at the Sketch Offices for the drawings and hope to let you have them by Saturday. I am to be in the Chair at the Savage... and hope you will be there. The Lord Chief Justice has promised to come and Frank Lockwood. Background
Sir William Purdie Treloar, 1st Baronet, was Lord Mayor of London, Founder of the Treloar College and School. As Alderman of the Ward of Faringdon Without he said that he represented 'the World, the Flesh and the Devil', i.e., Fleet Street, the home of the newspaper press; the Central Meat Market and the Temple. He established an active Cripples' Fund as his mayoral appeal. Sir William is famous for the Treloar hospital at Alton which he founded. Sir Frank Lockwood (1846-1897) was a lawyer and Liberal Member of Parliament as MP for York. In May 1895 Lockwood was lead counsel for the prosecution in Regina v. Oscar Wilde. The Liberal government seemed determined to get a successful prosecution. Edward Carson, who had successfully defended the Marquess of Queensbury against Wilde's misguided criminal libel, approached Frank Lockwood and asked Can we not let up on the fellow now?. Lockwood answered that he would like to do so, but feared that the case had become too politicised to be dropped.
