Background
Cranfield, from being a very successful Mercer and Merchant Adventurer, took to advising the crown on finance, achieving economies and bringing in revenue more efficiently. As part of a power struggle between the Commons and the Court he was impeached in 1624, Pye being one of the witnesses, but pardoned in 1627. For the date, Pye was knighted at Theobalds on 13th July 1621, while on 9th July 1621 Sir Lionel became Baron Cranfield. However, he still kept his Christian name in his signature, for example in BL Add MS 6176, f. 4, a letter of 2nd October 1621 ('Lionell Cranfeild')
