KNOX

(Ronald Arbuthnott, 1888-1957, Roman Catholic Priest, Translator of the Bible)
Typed Letter Signed To Dear Drummond,
asking if he had ever thanked him for that most excellent Wimborne? Finding your letter still lying about has given me qualms. It wasn't really a Wimborne, so I have invented a special page for freak contributions, which at present includes yours, and a page from a local time-table, headed 'where to shop in High Wycombe' and quite blank except for one advertisement of a monumental mason..., 1 side oblong 8vo., with original autograph envelope, The Old Palace, Oxford headed paper, 28th July

Background
Knox served as Catholic chaplain at the University of Oxford from 1926 to 1939. He completed the Knox Bible, a new English translation of the Latin Vulgate Bible that was used in Catholic services during the 1960s and 1970s. In 1951, Pope Pius XII appointed Knox protonotary apostolic ad instar, which entitled Knox to the honorific monsignor. The recipient is Malcolm DRUMMOND (1880-1945) who a painter and printmaker, noted for his paintings of urban scenes and interiors. Influenced by the Post-Impressionists and Walter Sickert, he was a member of the Camden Town Group and the London Group. 'Wimbornes' was a game invented by Knox of captioning newspaper photographs with an inappropriate caption taken from elsewhere in the same newspaper. Evelyn Waugh mentions it in his biography of Ronald Knox on pages 222-224.
