explaining that her reason for not writing sooner is a good one - I am working again. But now I must tell you how perfectly ripping I think the Show Card for A.B. I never saw a more effective card, so much so that I think it would be a good stroke of business to send it to all London books Shops, these holiday folk are going to collect books. Such people often like a book that deals in some way with the country, I think. Please send it everywhere you can because I love it. I do feel grateful for all the trouble you take to keep the ship afloat. Background
Between 1906 and 1936 she published five volumes of poetry, seven novels, and a number of short stories. The book for which she is best remembered - The Well of Loneliness came out in 1928 - a novel about lesbianism which won the gold medal of the Eichelbergher humane award but which was prosecuted under the Obscene Publications Act. She wrote The Unlit Lamp in 1924, A Saturday Life in 1925 and Adam’s Breed in 1926.
Mr Francis worked for the publicity department of the publishers Cassell and Company. The initials ‘A.B.’ would refer to her book Adam’s Breed, published in the year of this letter.
