Background
In 1840 Colonel Rose was selected for special service in Syria, supporting the Turkish Government against Mehemet Ali's Egyptian forces. He remained as British Consul-General. In the Crimea his fluency in French was invaluable as commissioner at the French HQ. In 1857 he volunteered for India, becoming commander-in-chief there in 1860.
