I don't think I ever answered yours of 24th May, in which you were good enough to say that the public were so dead against Lord F that I needn't trouble my head about him - all of which is perfectly true. But one can never forget that he has humiliated the Army & lowered us in the eyes of the nation. It is grievous that its sense of justice & comradeship should have been so violated, and its reputation for fairness & loyalty so besmirched. He was one of the few British survivors of the Battle of Isandlwana as a young officer, he also distinguished himself in the Second Boer War. Smith-Dorrien's last position was as Governor of Gibraltar from 9 July 1918 until 26 May 1923, where he introduced an element of democracy and closed some brothels
