HOWITT

(William, 1792-1879, Author, husband of Mary, 1799-1888)
Autograph Letter Signed to Mrs Charles GRAVES
(Selina, née Cheyne, died 1873, wife of Bishop Graves) thanking her for the information which you gave me regarding the Cartoons discovered at Cromwell House, Highgate. I was aware of its present use as an outpost of the Convalescent Hospital, but not of the discovery you mention, which is interesting. I saw, sometime ago a shortened piece... that a subterranean passage had been discovered leading, or was supposed to Andrew Marvell's House on the other side of the road, now destroyed by Aldermanic barbarism. I must make some enquiries respecting these facts before I reprint the work..., 2 sides 8vo., no place, 15th July

Background
The Howitts, originally Quakers, later (1847) Spiritualists, married in 1821, and that year published jointly 'The Forest Minstrels & other Poems'. William's 'Popular History of Priestcraft', 1833, won him the active favour of Liberals and the office of alderman at Nottingham. They spent 1840-1842 at Heidelberg for their children's education, William publishing 'The Student Life of Germany' under the name 'Dr. Cornelius' in 1841. Other books followed from a visit to his brother in the Australian gold fields, 1852-1854. From 1856 to 1862 he worked on Cassell's 'Illustrated History of England' and from 1861 to 1864, with his wife, on the 'Ruined Abbeys and Castles of Great Britain'. Charles Graves (1812-1899) was an Irish mathematician, academic, and clergyman. He was Erasmus Smith's Professor of Mathematics at Trinity College Dublin (1843–1862), and was president of the Royal Irish Academy (1861–1866). He served as dean of the Chapel Royal at Dublin Castle, and later as Bishop of Limerick, Ardfert and Aghadoe.
