LETTER FROM A MAN WHO HAD BEEN WITH SCOTT ON HIS LAST AND FATAL EXPEDITION

GRAN

(Tryggve, 1888-1980, Norwegian Aviator, Polar Explorer and Author)
Fine Autograph Letter Signed to Catherine DUPRÉ
(1926-2014, Writer) thanking her for her letter which he got when he returned home from abroad. I understand your way of thinking - feeling. It will give you a more intimate view knowing a man who has shared - let me say life and 'death' with dear Uncle Bill. Of course you are welcome indeed to visit me and my wife. But - but, it is very late in the year & will be anything but a comfortable - sunny trip. And in addition very expensive with an English £ of today. Would not a telephone call do? A few weeks ago an American woman - a university teacher, telephoned me from San Francisco just to be able to say to her pupils that she 'knew' a man who had been with Robert Scott on his last and fatal expedition. About five minutes we spoke together. If you write me a letter with questions regarding 'Bill' and number them you will get the answer over the phone... with an Autograph postscript signed with initials In Lord Mount Evans - Teddy Evans book 'South with Scott' you will find fragments of my diary - of quite importance for your work..., 3 sides 8vo., with original autograph envelope, Capri, 4890 Grimstad headed paper, 12th October

Background
Gran was the skiing expert on the 1910–13 Scott Antarctic Expedition and was the first person to fly across the North Sea from Scotland to Norway in a heavier-than-air aircraft in August 1914. During WW1 he joined the Royal Flying Corps and flew night bombing raids on the Western Front, for which he was awarded the Military Cross. He co-piloted the first flight from London via Oslo to Stockholm in 1920. During WWII he aligned himself with Vidkun Quisling's ruling party, and was sentenced to 18 months in prison in 1948. At this time Catherine Dupré was working on a biography of Edward Wilson who was affectionately nicknamed Uncle Bill by the men of the expedition, Wilson was the confidant of many, respected for his judgement, skills at mediation and dedication to others. By all accounts, Wilson was probably Scott's closest comrade of the expedition.
