Son of the famous piano teacher Salvador Sala, who gave him his first music lessons when he was only six, and in 1902 he began to study the cello at the Municipal School of Music in Barcelona, finishing four years later the six specialty courses with the highest honorific qualification. In 1906 he gave a concert at the Teatre Principal (Barcelona) and two at the Novedades, in the same city, with extraordinary success, and in 1907 he won the cello competitions at the Municipal School of Music. In the same year he made a major tour of major cities in northern Spain, Biarritz and Bayonne and other foreign cities; in 1909 he gave numerous concerts in Paris.
